EMA Post Election Update | 12 Nov

To the election winners go the spoils, along with the challenge of leading New Zealand through a demanding period at home and abroad.

The incoming government will take office against a backdrop of geopolitical instability, disrupted trade and energy markets, weak productivity and an economic recovery that has regained some momentum but remains exposed to further shocks. Businesses will be looking for clarity on which policies will change, which reforms will survive and whether the next three years will deliver the certainty needed to invest, hire and grow.

Join EMA Head of Advocacy and Strategy Alan McDonald for a practical post-election assessment of what the result means for business. He will examine the economic and political forces facing the new government, the legislation passed during the coalition government’s term and the choices now confronting the parties forming the next administration.

Drawing on the EMA’s 2026 Policy Directives, Alan McDonald will outline where recent reforms should be allowed to take effect and where further action remains necessary. The discussion will cover the issues businesses have consistently raised with the EMA, including energy security, infrastructure and consenting, employment law, workforce capability, manufacturing resilience, immigration, investment and innovation.

The focus will be firmly on what comes next: the likely direction of government policy, the implications for employers and the priorities the EMA will continue to advance on behalf of business.
